The lives of the Wessco royal family have always been extraordinary. Abounding in power and wealth, and marked by moments of soul-searing passion, exquisite love, and tragic loss.

In this collection of short stories, set during the time period of the Royally books and beyond, we explore the moments that helped shape these characters into the irresistible heroes and heroines readers have come to know and cherish.

We meet Prince Nicholas and Henry’s parents, Prince Thomas and Lady Calista; we see the struggle to balance family relationships with the demands of the monarchy; and we continue the story of Queen Lenora and Prince Edward, whose deep, abiding love lasts beyond a lifetime.

Royally Remembered is not a standalone–it is a companion novella meant to be read after Royally Screwed, Royally Matched, Royally Endowed, and Royally Yours.

5 heartbreakingly bittersweet stars

I am a mad fan of Emma Chase, and the Royally series is one of my all-time faves, so of course I was so excited to dive into this collection of bonus scenes from the series. I was not ready.

The scenes are predominantly from Lenore and Edward’s perspective, beginning after Royally Yours and mostly taking place before Royally Screwed – with a couple of scenes after. And, to be completely honest, it’s all the scenes from the series that I didn’t want to see, because oh my God, my heart! We know these characters have been through difficult times, and here they are laid out in all of their devastation, perfectly described by Chase in her Author’s note:

“…moments that are alluded to but not shown on the page … these moments that played such an integral part in shaping these characters into who they ultimately became.”

As a romcom writer, I’ve never seen this side of Emma Chase, but she can certainly bring the feels! This wasn’t just a read where tears were delicately falling down my face, I freaking ugly cried – sobbing, hiccupping breaths and all. It hurt so bad, but despite the heartache, seeing the love between the family and how the characters pick themselves up and carry on despite all they go through is really special.

There are a couple of light moments – any moment with Edward and Lenore together and seeing all that they mean to each other is an absolute win, and I did enjoy seeing young Nicholas and Henry.

Dear God, my grandparents are flirting with each other. This is what hell must be like.

I wouldn’t say it’s a must-read for the series, but fans will want it – just be prepared, because if you’re hoping for the light-hearted, laugh-out-loud hilarity of the other books of the series, this is definitely not that book. But it’s absolutely beautifully written, full of emotion, and shows us more of what builds these amazing characters.  And ultimately, it does finish well – I just need to go and reread all of the other books now to see all of those happy moments again.

5 stars (just because of how much I love these characters, and how beautifully these scenes are written – not factoring in the emotional wreck I was when I finished it).
