“We don’t live in the real world, in picket-fence places. We lie the way we live – fast, hard and bloody. Life is fast, and death is faster.”

4 ‘Hell Yeah’ stars

I love this book! A solid continuation of the storyline from book 1 of the series, Forgotten Sins, this time we get the story of Matt – the eldest of four brothers who were genetically engineered to be super-soldiers, only to escape from the facility where they had been kept their entire lives, and are now on the run and searching for answers for their very survival.

Matt is fantastic! As the eldest brother, he feels a huge responsibility for his brothers, and I love the absolute love he has for them, and his firm commitment to creating a good life for his family. His search for a way to save his, and his brothers’ lives brings him to Charmed, a small town in Idaho. As part of his cover while in town, he takes a job as a bouncer at the local bar where he meets bar owner – young, single and hot, Laney.

Laney is in Charmed as part of her new life. Running from a terrible past, she is in hiding with a new identity, and she guards her secrets fiercely. She is kind and brave, but still suffering from the terrors of her past, and when she meets confident, masculine and sexily dangerous Matt Dean, she knows that she is in serious trouble with him.

Matt is protective and intuitive, and he is attracted to Laney from the very start. The chemistry between them is off the charts, and there is lots of flirting and eye fuckery going on. And even though they both acknowledge that a hook up between them can’t be anything but temporary, they can’t deny their attraction, or their growing feelings for each other.

“You’re closer to a good guy than you believe.”
… “Don’t look for traits I don’t have. I know exactly who I am.”
“Who are you?” she whispered.
“The guy who’s going to have you screaming his name within the next hour.”

Oh yeah, he is! Matt is all kinds of hot, and it’s not long before their feelings for each other grow into something serious and they fall fast, and they fall hard!

“I’ve lived a dark life, and you’re all light.”

And in the middle of the unfolding romance, just when I was wondering whether there was going to be much action in this book, a series of murders in town puts Matt in the firing line of the local Sheriff, and that’s just the start of some huge twists and turns. Dragging up both Matt and Laney’s pasts, the reveals are emotional and intense, and the change between them when they finally reveal everything to each other is absolutely sensational. And from there the story just kept getting better and better, right up until the action packed, kick-ass ending.

Considering the entire events of this book take place within a two week period, the love story is very fast developing, but their situation is intense, and the build up is definitely there. It felt realistic to me, and I was easily swept away by all of the swoon.

“I love completely, Laney, and I’m sure it’s a pain in the ass … You have my heart and always will.”

I was absolutely enthralled through this book. It’s fast paced with a great romance, an intriguing mystery storyline, lots of shocks and big reveals and, as I said, heaps of action. Matt’s brothers make an appearance, and their interactions were fantastic as always. Nate plays a big part, and there is a bit more lead in to his story with a big twist that will have me reaching for his book very soon! The pieces are starting to come together, and I can’t wait for more.

I loved it – 4 stars.
