The line between darkness and light is drawn in blood, and the stakes have never been higher. Nothing less than the fate of the world rests in the hands of the Order, and in one Breed warrior’s quest to thaw the heart of an immortal queen in the final novel of Lara Adrian’s New York Times and #1 international bestselling Midnight Breed vampire romance series.

As a Breed warrior and the son of the Order’s founder and commander, Darion Thorne is an exacting tactician and a lethal combatant, yet nothing can prepare him for the catastrophic act that forces him to step to the helm of the Order as its leader. With their adversaries growing bolder and more brazen with every strike, Darion knows he must take the war to them before it’s too late to stop them at all.

Yet of all their enemies, the one most dangerous for Darion is the beautiful, yet volatile, Selene, Queen of the Atlanteans. Determined to recover four powerful crystals stolen from her ages ago, Selene will go to any lengths to have them. When that goal puts one of the Order’s own in the crosshairs, she finds herself locked in a personal battle with Darion, a Breed warrior she knows she should despise, yet who stirs an unbidden desire within her.

With the battle lines drawn between them and a diabolical evil on the rise, can Darion and Selene put aside their mistrust in time to save all they hold dear, or will they see the world plunge into a darkness that has no end?

Review

5 stars for a fantastic finale!

This was always going to be a bittersweet read for me – the Midnight Breed series is one of my favourites, I have so much love for these characters and I look forward to each and every one of the books, so this being the last was always going to come with a mix of emotions. I’m so sad to see the series end, but Lara Adrian has delivered an exciting, emotional and explosive ending for her much-beloved series, giving it a well-deserved, satisfying send-off.

This is Darion’s book, bringing the series full circle, as Darian on is the son of Lucan and Gabrielle, whose story was the first of the Midnight Breed books (Kiss of Midnight). Lucan is the founder and leader of the Order, and Darion has grown up within the group of fighters, becoming a fierce warrior himself, and a valued member of the group. When he is forced to step in for his father, he finds himself suddenly leading the confrontation against the Order’s many enemies, and it’s a battle he’s more than ready for.

“We didn’t start this war, but we’re sure as fuck going to finish it.”

After all of their years of fighting, the Order are facing three growing threats – the mysterious group Opus Nostrum, who are creating rogue vampires and setting them loose to wreak horrific violence, an Ancient ancestor who has control of powerful crystals who is prowling around with his own secret agenda, and the ruthless Atlantean queen, who has made it clear that she will go to any lengths to retrieve the crystals that belong to her and her people.

Darion has seen Selene, the Queen of the Atlanteans, over video chat, where they’ve exchanged harsh words. But despite her powerful threats, he couldn’t help but be completely captivated by her. So when the two races find themselves on a knife’s edge, Darion takes it up on himself to travel to her supernaturally hidden island to meet with her personally.

After previous books featured Selene as maliciously evil, I was keen to finally get to know her and, as expected, there is so much more to her than we have been shown. She’s strong and ruthless, yes, but she’s also vulnerable, lonely, and fiercely protective of her people and will do anything to protect them. When Darion Thorne arrives on the shores of her secret kingdom, she is not impressed, but there’s something about the dark and dangerous warrior that has her feeling things she hasn’t felt for centuries.

“Fuck” … “Why did it have to be you?”

There’s fantastic chemistry between Darion and Selene. There’s insta-lust on both sides, and though they taunt, bicker and threaten each other, neither of them can resist the mad attraction that sizzles between them, and I loved seeing these enemies very quickly give in to all that passion.

“I came here prepared to fight an enemy,” he murmured, his voice rough with need. “I came here expecting to feel contempt for you, not this. Christ, anything but this.”
He lowered his head and kissed her, hot and hard and deep.

It’s hot and steamy, and I was so on board with these two. They want to fight it, but they just can’t, and watching them crash together was just fantastic. I love Dare so much, he’s smart, he doesn’t take any crap, and he’s such a badass while also being deeply caring. And as a book hero (romantic and otherwise), he’s amazing! He has this charmingly irresistible arrogance that is so fun, and he’s the perfect balance to Selene’s seriousness and secretly scarred heart. He very quickly breaks down her walls, they fall hard and fast for each other, and it’s so beautiful!

Somehow, this dark Breed warrior who was so formidable, so expertly lethal, had become her safe harbor.
Her haven.

It’s a quick moving romance, but it needs to be, because there’s SO much else going on in this story! Between all of the enemies that they are facing, we also check in with different characters of the series, getting the opportunity to catch up with them and seeing where they’re at, and I LOVED THAT! I only wish there was time to check in with everybody, but I was grateful for those different POVs that we did get, which showed progression for some of the couples, and provided great closure to their stories.

But never fear, the ENTIRE Order are on board for this final outing, and it’s epic. Some people only get mentions, and again, I wish there would have been more, but if this book contained everything I wanted to see, it probably would have been 800+ pages. So again, what we see is so good, and had me grinning with excitement and anticipation. And as the final action went down, I was so into it I actually cheered out loud at one point. I loved being so caught up in it all.

This was such an enjoyable read. It had all of the Order action, excitement and intrigue that I was hoping for, with fun moments that keep things light and show the bond between everybody. The romance was fast-moving, and not as much of a focus as earlier books have had (which it had to be with everything else that was happening), but I still felt it. There’s also a strong emotional element to this book which really got me in the feels, and all of the different aspects of the story are beautifully wound together to create a fantastic finish to the series.

It’s a great send-off for the crew, I’m so sad to say goodbye, but look forward to many rereads in the future.

5 stars!
