But for a vampire in love with a mortal, nothing about the future is certain.

When an unexpected loss compels Chloe’s return to her childhood home, she’s forced to face the reality of her mortality and decide what her future will hold.

Will she turn toward humanity or follow her lover into the dark?

Review

3. 5 stars

This novella is set within the Elemental Legacy world, and is the second book for Gavin and Chloe, continuing their story as a committed couple.

I wouldn’t recommend reading this book as a standalone, and please note that is does contain some spoilers for storylines in earlier books in this spin-off series.

It’s been five years since Gavin and Chloe fell in love in The Devil and the Dancer. They are together, they are happy, and they are navigating their human/vampire relationship well. But Gavin hasn’t fully let Chloe into his world, and he’s also fearful of what their future holds.

He loved her. He hadn’t loved a being more than her in over 150 years. To him, she was eternity.
And Gavin had no idea what he’d do if she didn’t choose him.

A death in the family sends Chloe travelling across the country (with Ben, Tenzin and friends to accompany her), and forces her to confront her future. And with dedicated, protective and swoony Gavin by her side, it’s time for him to open up to her more, and for them to discuss what comes next for them.

“I spent nearly two hundred years alone, and then I found you.” He shook his head. “You charming, funny, magnetic, brilliant woman, of course I want you forever.”

This is a really sweet read. It’s romantic and sexy, and there’s a little bit of excitement when bad guys from Gavin’s business life threaten the only thing he truly cares about. I loved seeing Gio and Beatrice, Ben and Tenzin again and just loved being back in this world.

Gavin and Chloe’s story feels finished-but-not-finished, but they will appear in future books in this world, and I’m sure we’ll get to see what the future has in store for them.

3.5 stars.
