4.5 stars!

I love this book! A fun, witty, sexy and heartfelt friends-to-lovers romance that really gets you thinking when our outspoken heroine is faced with some very intriguing questions – what if you found out that you were fated to marry somebody who is only a friend? And what if you knew that it was destined to fall apart?

Susie has inherited her aunt’s house and she’s starting renovations when she gets a huge surprise – her contractor shows up and it’s her ex-boyfriend’s best friend, Lars. Susie and Lars always got on really well, but they haven’t seen each other in the six months since Susie’s year-long relationship blew up brutally and publicly (that story is shown in the prequel novella, Beginning of the End which isn’t necessary to read, but will provide some immediate context). She’s moved on since then, and though it feels a bit odd, she welcomes Lars into her home.

But things get super awkward when Lars opens up a wall in the home and finds a divorce certificate hidden there – their divorce certificate, dated ten years into the future. They both think the other is pranking them, and are understandably unimpressed, but they come to realise that it hasn’t been planted. But how could it possibly exist?

It seems a bit of an odd twist for Kylie Scott, and I was so curious to see where she was going to take the potential supernatural element of the story, and though it’s explored, the heart of the story is Susie and Lars, and the opportunity they have been presented with to examine their friendship and, for the first time, think about the possibility of it becoming more.

Sharing meals, outings, and easy night in on the couch, they easily re-establish their friendship, but the existence of the certificate has them looking beyond that and exploring the idea of an actual relationship between them. They are so open and honest with each other about EVERYTHING! They acknowledge that they are attracted to each other, but given the messiness of Lars being best friends with her ex, they agree not to act on it and just be friends. But they talk about the potential of what could be, and they talk about what could possibly go wrong between them to see it all end so tragically. And, bit by bit, they grow closer, and unexpectedly start to fall for each other.

I love Susie and Lars together. A little bit quirky, and a little bit edgy, there’s no pretence or game-playing with them, what you see is what you get, and the chemistry between them is fantastic! The book is written entirely from Susie’s POV, and though Lars is honest with her, he does hold back on just how much he’s feeling, so watching him fall through her eyes is really gorgeous. I could feel their attraction growing and their feelings deepening, and the anticipation and sexual tension builds so well until we finally get the most gorgeous love story – still playful, still open and honest, but this time with all the sexy time and sweet declarations.

They do have some pretty significant hurdles to overcome, and I loved watching their story unfold. There’s very little angst or unnecessary drama, I was right there with Susie and Lars the whole way through, and their story is beautifully written.

If you’re nervous about the supernatural element, it’s there, but it’s very minor, and it doesn’t play into the story beyond the existence of the certificate and the questions it raises, so please don’t let that put you off. This is a gorgeous, fun, sexy love story, written with all of Kylie Scott’s usual charm and heart, and I loved it!

4.5 stars!

The audiobook is narrated by Andie Arndt who does a wonderful job with the story, as always. I recommend listening to this one.
