Release & ARC Review: Tyrant by R.K. Lilley

Tyrant by R.K. Lilley is live!

What a delight of a read! Written entirely from the hero’s perspective, we get to watch a proudly debauched playboy fall madly and completely in love for the very first time. A funny, smutty, wonderfully entertaining boss/employee, forced proximity, age gap romance, I loved this book!

I was done for. Profoundly screwed.

The issue, of course, was my assistant, Devereux.

She was slowly but surely driving me crazy.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Hiring her was supposed to bring order to my life.

Instead, she’d brought disorder.

Chaos. Irritation. Malaise.

Comfort. Exuberance. Delight.

I was obsessed with her.

Truly, irrevocably obsessed.

She was stubborn. Standoffish. Painfully honest.

Take no prisoners efficient.

In summary, a termagant — much too young for me.

And even I, oblivious bastard extraordinaire, was aware in some corner of my mind, of every well-laid plan I’d ever had slowly crashing down and exploding into dust.

I was simply no match for Devereux Laurent.

5 stars!

What a delight of a read! Written entirely from the hero’s perspective, we get to watch a proudly debauched playboy fall madly and completely in love for the very first time. A funny, smutty, wonderfully entertaining story, I loved this book!

Turner Thorne was a side character in The Wild Side series, and characters from those books, and from some of Lilley’s other series, appear in this book. I was in fangirl heaven at the cameos, but new readers will easily be able to read this as a standalone.

A famous horror writer, Turner Thorne needs a new assistant (he kept sleeping with his previous ones), and when his friend Iris sets him up with Devereaux Laurent, he hires her on the spot when there seems to be no sexual attraction between them at all. Turner doesn’t take anything too seriously, he’s charmingly childish, completely OTT with the flirting and innuendo, and so overtly and shamelessly hedonistic, it’s funny. And when Devereaux moves in, she quickly takes charge of his life, not falling for any of his crap and snarking back at his constant banter. And of course, he falls completely under her spell.

“What? I’m an affectionate guy.”
“Affectionate like a horny puppy.”
“A horny puppy? Really? That the best you can come up with?”
Her soft, pouty mouth was twisted thoughtfully. “Ridiculous, perverted, narcissist,” she tried.
“Hey!” That one hit close enough to home to actually sting a bit. “I’m not ridiculous.”
She was walking away. “I’m too busy for this, you gorgeous asshole,” she muttered under her breath.
“That one was practically a compliment!”

It’s a fabulous dynamic, with Turner doing everything he can to seduce his young assistant, who seems completely immune to his charms. But there is a flicker of something between them, and the sexual tension is absolutely fantastic!

She ran her thumb slowly over my bottom lip, once, twice. My eyelids drifted shut, but I forced them open to watch the way she was looking at me.
It was insane, with the amount of hedonistic delights I’d buried myself in over the years, but I’d swear it was the most sensual thing I’d ever experienced.
I was trembling. I’d never wanted anyone like this. Her thumb on my lips was more intense than full on penetration with another woman. It was bedlam.

Turner is not a relationship guy, and Deveraux is fully aware of that, but the chemistry between them is impossible to resist and when they inevitably come together, it’s as hot, steamy, passionate and intense as all of the build-up hinted at.

I took a deep breath, then another, my need rising up to the surface until I was choking on it.
“Not to be overdramatic,” I told her gruffly, rubbing her nipple through her thin white blouse, “but if I can’t get my dick inside of you soon, I think I might die.”
She laughed, the sadist.

Turner’s feelings for Devereaux border on obsession, but I loved seeing him so completely smitten. It’s the first time he’s really felt anything for anybody, and he has no idea what he’s feeling, or what to do with all of the emotion that he’s suddenly wrestling with. I loved watching him try to work through it all, suddenly vulnerable and completely clueless, having no clue to handle any of it. And through it all, Devereaux is a powerhouse. Opening herself up to Turner in a way she hasn’t with anybody else, yet standing strong and not allowing him to completely overwhelm her. Between all of the snark, sarcasm, name calling and sexy time, there’s a true equal partnership between them, and I love them together so much!

This is a sweet, smart, funny, sexy and heartfelt story for two fantastic characters, and I loved every moment of this one! And to top it off, there’s a happy ending, and an epilogue which ties everything up beautifully and left me smiling.

This book was so much fun. 5 stars!
