The essential guide to all things Blood and Ash and Flesh and Fire, this is a comprehensive, informative and entertaining encyclopedia for Jennifer L. Armentrout’s incredible fantasy world, and a must-have for fans of the series.

If you’re the kind of reader who loves to completely immerse themselves in a fictional world, if you get lost while reading fantasy novels and need a reference guide to help you, if you forget series details in between book releases and need a refresher, of if you just cannot get enough of this incredible world that JLA has created, and the characters that inhabit it, this book is for you.

A couple of things to note – this is a world compendium. It is not a progression storyline for either of the series. And beware HUGE spoilers for all of the events of both series up to this point, so do not read this book if you haven’t read up to A Soul of Ash and Blood (Blood and Ash, #5) AND A Fire in the Flesh (Flesh and Fire, #3).

Written from the perspective of Mis Willa Colyns (author of the infamous erotic diary), there’s a personal aspect to the storytelling which makes it so entertaining (eg. “He can’t control his lust, and they have glorious, unfettered sex in the snowy forest. It brought back some very good memories for me.”) and allows us to get a different perspective of the events of both series so far.

The compendium contains:

  • Pronunciation guide
  • Glossary of terms
  • World maps and location guides
  • Character profiles
  • Family trees and bloodlines
  • Bonus scenes (including a Nyktos POV!)
  • Exclusive artwork
  • Timelines
  • Playlists
  • Quotes
  • Some random chapters from Miss Willa’s diary (with some surprising partners) to inject some spice.

Through all of this we get descriptions about the magic, lore and political complexities of the world, as well as unique perspectives on the characters, their motivations and events that occurred off-the-page, and I loved all of the additional information which further fleshed out this world. I certainly picked up some things that hadn’t even occurred to me, or that I may have missed on my first (and second) reads through, and understand different aspects of the story so much better. I’m looking forward to continuing on with the series (and my next reread) with new perspectives to consider.

Armentrout and Ravyn Salvador have done a phenomenal job putting this collection together. It shows all of the work that goes into creating a world as complex and immersive as this one, and I’m even more in awe of all that Armentrout has built with this incredible story.

5 stars.
