For as long as I can remember, Lachlan West has been my brother’s best friend and the love of my life. Trouble is, he kissed me four years ago and then never spoke to me again.
I was doing great pretending he doesn’t exist until I was assigned to write an article about former college athletes, and I learn that the sexy single dad is my first interview.
Determined to wow my editor with an amazing sportsball piece—(have I mentioned I know nothing about sports?)—I head to Ember Falls, ready to face my fears—and the man I love.
The grumpy quarterback turned fireman wants nothing to do with me or my article. Yet, somehow I persuade him to let me follow him around for a few weeks, and even if he said yes just to get rid of me, I’ll take it.
But the longer I stay in his small town, the more complicated our story gets. The boundaries we set fall to the ground—along with our clothes.
He holds me like I matter, touches me like I’m cherished and kisses me like he loves me.
We both know I have to leave Ember Falls, and he’ll never follow—I only wish I could write a different ending to our story.

The first book in a brand new series from Corinne Michaels, this is such a sweet read! A brother’s best friend, childhood friends to lovers, single dad romance, Lachlan and Ainsley are so sweet together, and I loved their love story.
Lachlan and Ainsley grew up together. As the children of military fathers, Lachlan was best friends with Ainsley’s older brother, Caspian, and Ainsley was always right there beside them on their adventures. As a teenager, Ainsley fell hard for Lachlan, and in their early 20s they shared a scorching kiss, but the timing wasn’t right, it ended badly, and it’s been four years since they’ve spoken. Now, Ainsley is a reporter and she’s been tasked with writing a story on Lachlan – ex-NFL hopeful, now heroic firefighter. So she’s off to the small town of Ember Falls to face her past and write a hopefully-career-changing article.
It’s a fun set-up, and there are lots of fun and funny moments as Ainsley comes to town, determined to avoid Lachlan unless they’re working on her story – which he wants nothing to do with. Instead, she gets caught up in a range of entertaining situations with Lachlan and his friends, with Lachlan desperate to spend time with the woman he’s secretly loved for half of his life.
“One day we’re going to have to figure this out and stop dancing around what we feel.”
Yes, Ainsley’s ‘unrequited’ love is very much requited. These two love each other wildly. They’ve just never admitted it to each other. But the chemistry is electric, and when Ainsley ends up moving into Lachlan’s house while she’s in town, the forced proximity makes their attraction irresistible, and they cannot resist finally acting on their longstanding feelings, even if they know their time together is limited.
“Give me tonight, Ainsley. Don’t try to find a way or get in your head, just give me tonight. Please.”
“I’d give you forever.”
I loved watching these two come together but they definitely don’t make it easy on themselves! Though they both own their feelings and embrace every moment of their sizzling sexy time, it takes a while for them to actually open up to each other. They have their reasons, but I was so ready to embrace the love-fest, and it took a while to get there. But it eventually comes, and their changed relationship is natural, easy, and beautifully sweet and swoony.
“I love you. I’ve loved you my whole life.”
“Sweetheart, you can’t imagine how much I love you … How could I not? You’re everything to me … You have invaded every part of my life, but that’s because you live in my heart and soul. No one has ever made me feel like this.”
They do have some issues to resolve – their pasts, and their complicated family dynamics which impact their relationship in the present – and bravo to Ainsley for being a superstar as she fights hard for her happy ending. I loved watching them work through it and get the HEA that they have both waited so long for.
Being the first in the series, we get introduced to a fantastic cast of characters. Lachlan’s frisbee mates are the obvious picks to get books in the rest of the series, and they are a great bunch with a fun dynamic. I can’t wait to read their stories. I’d love to see Ainsley’s brother get a book at some point as well. And a shout-out to Lachlan’s six-year-old daughter, Rose, who is a delight.
I really enjoyed this one – 4 stars.
