At ten years old, they promised each other forever.

But his letters never came. And her heart never healed.

Seven years later, Xander Ford returns to Castle Hill Academy, broken by grief and hiding behind logic, rowing, and the weight of caring for his sick father. He never stopped thinking of Emery Wallace, the kind girl who once saw him when no one else did.

Emery looks perfect on the outside: wealthy, popular, untouchable. But behind the flawless mask is a girl unraveling under her father’s ruthless expectations and her mother’s drowning grief.

When fate pulls them back together, the connection they shared as kids flares into something undeniable and impossible to ignore. Emery shows Xander that people, like light, can be both shattered and whole. And Xander gives Emery a reason to believe in herself again.

But their love faces obstacles they can’t control—family expectations, broken promises, and the cruel truth that not everyone wants them together.

Some loves are once-in-a-lifetime. The question is: can theirs keep them in the light?

Review

5 “You make me believe in magic” stars!

I was absolutely consumed by this story. It is a beautiful, unputdownable coming of age romance that has its hold on me and won’t let me go. Emery and Xander own a piece of my heart. It’s an instant favorite and I want nothing more than to relive their story over and over again.

One summer, two children share an unforgettable moment. Both experiencing their own unimaginable pain, for a few hours Emery and Xander find solace in each other and when they promise to keep in touch, they feel like they have a lifeline. That lifeline is ripped from their grasp when the promise is broken. Who knew that losing touch with someone after only knowing them a few hours could shape one’s life so drastically and deliver so much heartache. And years later, that heartache still remains.

I’m doomed to remember a boy with mismatched eyes – not because of his eyes, or because he was the smartest person I ever knew, but because he is the reason I believe in true love. I’m a hopeless romantic because of Xander Ford.

When Emery and Xander see each other again, it’s not at all what they expected. He’s back in town with his dad and she’s in high school dating the captain of the crew team. He’s still a poor kid from the Bend and she’s still from the rich side of town. There are unanswered questions between them, and though there’s an invisible pull to one another, they try to stay out of each other’s lives. Afterall, the Richies don’t interact with the Benders.

However, when Emery needs tutoring help and Xander’s the smartest person she knows, they are forced together, unleashing a whole lot of feelings and a determination to understand what happened that kept them apart. He’s not only smart but when he joins the crew team and becomes a vital asset, it gives Emery’s boyfriend and the other Richies another reason to hate him and upsets the balance at school even more.

I adore Emery and Xander. They are perfectly imperfect. They show us their strength, their flaws, the depth of their love, and into their beautiful souls. My heart hurt because of everything they both went through as children as well as what they are facing when they meet again. These two have an undeniable bond. I wanted them to be together. I wanted to understand what kept them apart. Their story kept me hooked and connected because I needed them to work.

Their love story is not easy. It is beautiful but it also hurts. They face so many challenges and heartache along the way. I laughed, I cried, and I swooned. I wanted to fight for these two as they navigated their feelings and being in each other’s lives again.

I loved the support Xander gives Emery. I could tell he truly believed in her and wanted her dreams to come true. He was her number one fan.

The love I felt for Emery could not be measured or formulated into an equation. It wasn’t a finite particle but an infinite wave that rippled out into forever…

Emery understood Xander. He thinks on a whole other level. He is a genius and has accomplished so much but he is hurting inside and she makes things better. She is there for him when he needs her the most and though there are some really rough patches, they end out on top, just as they should be.

I absolutely loved this story. It’s unputdownable and unforgettable. It definitely deserves its place on my favorites shelf!
