Carys Morgan is a mythology professor who walked through a fae portal and into a shadow world where myths and magic are reality. She has danced with dragons, bargained with fae, and fallen for a Scottish blacksmith with the heart of a knight.

But now both the Shadowlands and the Brightlands are in danger because Carys unleashed an ancient power, and the old gods are looking to Carys for a solution.

A goddess of war is loose in the modern world, and the fate of both realms depends on Carys correcting her mistake. To return the Morrígan to the Shadowlands and stop the worlds from colliding, she’ll need the help of old gods, new gods, and every ally—living or dead—she’s made along the way.

Fall into the pages of this modern fairytale brought to life! BROKEN VEIL is the third installment in the SHADOWLANDS series by USA Today Bestselling Author Elizabeth Hunter. With vivid worldbuilding, relatable characters, and abundant mysteries to uncover, this is a world you’ll yearn to get lost in long after the last page is turned.

The third book in the Shadowlands series, this is an entertaining and adventure-filled journey full of magic and danger as the walls between the Shadowlands and the Brightlands are tested, and it’s up to Carys and her friends to save the day.

Beware spoilers for earlier books.

In the last book of the series, Carys accidentally released an ancient goddess from the Shadowlands into the real world. Now, the fae gates are failing, and with the help of her loyal friends, she sets out on a quest to save the Brightlands from an ancient and dangerous dark magic.

This book has a bit of a ‘Fellowship of the Ring’ vibe (including fun references aligning Cary’s and Frodo’s journeys). Carys and her friends have to find mysterious new allies to help them unlock each stage of their adventure and defeat a series of beasts as they hunt down the Morrigan and prepare for the final battle. Travelling through different worlds along the way, Carys finds help in the most surprising of places, and it’s really cleverly plotted out.

It’s an unlikely bunch of companions, made up of Cary’s hot Scottish lover, her ex, her best friend, a dragon, a fae, a shifter and ‘other’. There are some weird dynamics to contend with, and it makes the whole adventure that much more fun as we watch them bicker, argue, and support each other every step of the way. The romance burns brightly throughout, with Carys and Duncan together, happy, committed, and very much in love, and I loved their sweet, swoony and spicy moments together.

It’s a good build-up, but after all that they go through I found the big climax to be a bit underwhelming. But the book ends in a good place and I was glad to see a happy ending.

This book finishes off Carys’ story arc, but the author promises to return to the Shadowlands with stories for some of the side characters, and I am here for that!

A fun and entertaining read – 3 stars.
