The fifth book in the Laurel Snow series, and I loved being back with these fabulous characters for another adventure full of mystery and suspense. It’s a fun read with intrigue that kept me guessing, and just enough romance to satisfy my sappy heart, and I enjoyed this one.

FBI agent Laurel and her friends and colleagues are still recovering from the events of the last book, but they’re right back into it, investigating a seemingly unrelated series of deaths and attempted murders. She has her trusty colleagues and her broody boyfriend, Huck, by her side, but her psychopathic half-sister is causing all kinds of additional drama. Laurel will need to use her uncanny brilliance to figure out what’s going on, uncovering an unimaginable danger along the way.

I enjoy this series. It’s so cleverly written, the stories are unexpected and exciting, the characters are smart and wonderfully unique, and the relationships are realistic and so well developed. Even though the subject matter is kind of dark, the characters keep things light, and I love the sharp and banter-filled interactions between them.

As a romance fan, this one is extra satisfying as there are lots of moments with Laurel and Huck, and some great progression for them and their relationship. Laurel herself seems to be a target in this one, and Huck’s protectiveness is absolutely gorgeous. And when the burly, straight-talking ranger bears his heart, I was absolutely there for it!

“You’re my reason, Laurel.” Simple words. Intense eyes. Sharply handsome face.
She blinked “Your reason for what?”
“Everything.”
… You’re it for me. The reason I get up in the morning and double-check my security at night. I need you in this world with me. My reason.”

The case they’re working kept me guessing right up until the very end and adds even more layers to the underlying drama and tension in the series. I finished this book feeling satisfied, yet curious for more.
