The second book in The Irin Chronicles, this is absolutely not a standalone. It is the continuation of Ava and Malachi’s story that began in The Scribe, and it’s a heartwrenching and intriguing read that once again kept me captivated. I loved it.
This book picks up the story after those harrowing final chapters of the first book – beware spoilers below.
After discovering that she is part of a supernatural world, Ava is powerful, yet a shadow of who she used to be. She is secreted away to a hidden Norwegian sanctuary with others of her kind to learn more about her ancestry, the history of the Irina, and the extent of her powers, as she learns how to exist in the new world she has found herself in.
Meanwhile, Malachi is fighting his own battle, having woken with no memories of who he is. All he knows is his mate is out there and he needs to find her.
“Come back to me.”
This book takes us deeper into the world of the Irin and Irina, exploring their darkest moments, the devastating tragedy that upended their world, and the politics at play in the present. The characters from the previous books appear, and there are new ones introduced, and I loved watching this ever-growing group band together to fight the bad guys and save their race. There are stories unfolding off-page for some of the side characters, and I love that I’ll get to explore those as the series continues.
This book is exciting and unpredictable, and I’m loving being in this world and watching this story unfold. I’m going straight into the third and final book of the trilogy, and with Ava and Malachi both changed from who they were, and darkness creeping in, I can’t wait to see how it’s going to end and if any of my theories are correct.
Such a great read – 4 stars.
I listened to this as an audiobook, and like the first it’s narrated by Zachary Webber who does a great job. He narrates both Ava and Malachi’s perspectives, and his voices, and all of the different accents he uses to distinguish between the characters really bring them all to life. I definitely recommend listening to these books!
