Wow, I loved this book! A great start to what I’m sure is going to be yet another series for me to obsess over. The world, the characters and the storyline were all dark and dirty and gritty and nasty, and I freaking loved it!

Our heroine, Chess, is a Churchwitch. That is, somebody who does magic for the all-powerful Church. Her job is to investigate claims of hauntings, flushing out fakers who are after compensation for said hauntings, or, if substantiated, use her witchy magic to banish the ghosts.

But her life outside of her job is one royally effed-up mess. Living in the dirty part of town, she’s a junkie, and owes money to one of the most epic drug lords ever, Bump. So she agrees to take on a job for him on the side in order to pay back her debt. Helping her along the way is Bump’s Enforcer, Terrible. Definitley not the kind of hero you’d read about in other books, but I’ve gotta say, I kinda love him, and I love the dynamic between him and Chess. I’m excited to see how that’s all going to unfold!

The writing is fantastic, and I love that Kane does such a great job of getting us right into Chess’ head, because that is a dark place to be! Not only as she battles her inner demons, but also her job, her lifestyle, her home, and her dealings with others in her world, you can feel the dirt and darkness, and I felt completely immersed in it alongside her. But for all of her screwed-up-ness, I really love Chess. She’s a great character, and I can’t wait to see her in action a bit more.

It’s spooky, it’s dark, and it’s completely unputdownable (yes, that’s a word!). I can’t wait for more.
