Another fun, emotional, sexy and unexpected romance from the queens of co-writing! An enemies-to-lovers, boss/nanny relationship that is full of snark and chemistry with a love story that had me swooning, and a dramatic element that brings the feels. This is a read that gets you thinking and I thought it was really well done.
Elodie is on her way to a job interview when she gets into a fender bender with the most infuriating (and gorgeous) man she has ever met. They both blame the other for the accident, and the insults fly thick and fast until the police arrive and they head off to continue with their days. But Elodie rocks up to her interview for a nanny position to learn that the person interviewing her is none other than the guy from the accident. Awkward! Obviously things don’t go well, but she’s desperate for the job and after unexpectedly meeting and bonding with the little girl she would be caring for, the rich, condescending man reluctantly agrees to give her a chance.
Hollis LaCroix is a wealthy businessman who took his niece, Hailey, in with open arms after his younger brother was sent to jail. But his company keeps him busy, and he has no idea what to do with the troubled and outspoken 11-year-old so he hires the woman that she seems to have formed a connection with – even if she is mouthy and opinionated, and the most beautiful woman he has ever seen.
The attraction is clear between Elodie and Hollis from the very beginning. They may bicker constantly but you can feel that there is so much behind it, and I loved their teasing and banter. The arguments very quickly take on a flirtatious edge, and things get seriously (and somewhat shockingly) smutty. The sexual tension builds wonderfully, but they both fight crossing that final line… until they don’t. And holy freaking damn, it’s hot as hell!
Now that I’d given myself permission to touch her, I couldn’t keep my hands off.
The sexy time is sizzling, and because they’ve taken their time getting there, there is all kinds of emotion tangled up in their mad lust and the combination is explosive. And as much as they initially fought each other, once they take that step things are beautifully functional and I loved watching them fall and fall hard.
But both of them have been hurt before, and are carrying scars from their pasts. In fact, Hollis’ past unfolds in flashbacks throughout the book so we get to see his experience and feel the depth of his pain. So when life takes an unexpected turn, it puts both of them to the test as they are forced to face their biggest fears.
“You’re not the only one with abandonment issues. I feel like I’m always holding my breath for the other shoe to drop. And the fucked-up thing is, that feeling gets stronger when things are going well between us.”
I can usually pick a plot twist coming, and as a long-time reader of these authors I was expecting it, but this one still came as a huge surprise. I won’t say too much, but it’s definitely one that brings the shock factor, beginning a wild rollercoaster of emotion that could possibly trigger a lot of readers, but I was glued to my kindle as it all played out.
It’s definitely a dramatic read, but all of that emotion is balanced really well with the humour and fun that is these two together, and the inclusion of sassy little Hailey brings a lot of laughs. The love story is beautifully written, with lots of sexy time and lots of feels, and I really felt the connection between Hollis and Elodie.
Seamlessly written as always, Keeland and Ward once again prove that they are a magical team, delivering a romance that is both heartfelt and hilariously entertaining, with an epilogue that left me with a big grin on my face.
I loved it – 4 stars.
