Holden Parish survived his parents’ horrific attempts to make him “the perfect son.” After a year’s stint in a Swiss sanitarium to recover, he has vowed to never let anything–or anyone–trap him again. Brilliant but broken, he seeks refuge behind alcohol, meaningless sex, and uses his wicked sense of humor to keep people away. He only has to ride out one year in the coastal town of Santa Cruz with his aunt and uncle before he inherits his billions and can make his escape. Disappear.

Falling in love is not in the plans.

River Whitmore. Star quarterback of the Central High football team, Prom King, Mr. Popular, ladies’ man. He leads the perfect life…except it’s all a lie. His father has River’s future in the NFL all planned out, while River’s dream is to run the family business in the town that he loves. But his mother’s illness is tearing the family apart and River is becoming the glue that holds them together. How can he break his father’s heart when it’s already shattering?

River’s carefully-crafted façade explodes when he meets Holden Parish. A guy who dresses in coats and scarves year-round, drinks expensive vodka, and spends his free time breaking into houses for the fun of it. They’re complete opposites. River seeks a quiet life, away from the spotlight. Holden would rather have dental surgery than settle down.

Holden’s demons and River’s responsibilities threaten to keep them apart, while their undeniable attraction crashes them together again and again, growing into something deep and real no matter how they resist.

Until one terrible night changes everything.

Review

5 real stars!!

When You Come Back to Me is another emotional coming-of-age story in the Lost Boys series. It’s a journey of self-discovery, trust, hope, and love, and I devoured it!

The Girl in the Love Song is a favorite story of mine not only because I fell in love with Miller and Violet but because of the secondary characters who were just as complex. Holden is another “Lost Boy” and we get glimpse into his pain but I could never have imagined just how heart wrenching his story would be. However, with the pain comes so much love, and I am glad to get his story because he deserves all the love.

Holden has been through hell and my heart broke for him. Revisiting the horrific things he went through absolutely crushed me. I wanted to cry whenever the past was brought up and I desperately wanted him to find the love that would make a difference in his life. That one person who loved him completely.

The second I laid eyes on River Whitmore, my pulse kicked up a notch and a little thrill zipped down my spine. Like a tiny reminder of what it meant to be alive.

River is a great guy. He’s caring and sweet, and tries so hard to make his father proud. He is destined to be a superstar on the field but he is living a lie. He holds so much inside while trying to be the best he can be that he doesn’t really know who truly is. He’s confused and lost, and it isn’t until he meets Holden that he realizes just what he has been missing all along.

This book is emotionally draining in the best possible way. I was invested in these characters and couldn’t get them out of my head or heart days after finishing the book. My heart broke for Holden. The pain is real and I wanted to take it all away. When River comes into his life, it’s like a flame flickering to life. He doesn’t expect it but River affects him like no other.

It was as if he were seeing straight into my heart and mind, reading every secret I had hidden away…even those buried down so deep, I’d forgotten they were there. Until him.

River’s character has so much development in this book. From confusion and shame to acceptance and love, I enjoyed watching his journey. He is such a good person and I hated that he fought what was true. I loved watching him bloom into his true self and accepting all that he is.

I’d been playing a role, lying to myself for so long that I had no idea who I was.

Holden and Rivers connection is electric but its put out quickly.  It’s starts as an enemies-to-lovers romance and I loved the way the story developed.  From firsts to forevers, these two experience it all in a beautiful way. The romance is breathtaking and the relationship progresses is believable but it isn’t without its hardships. The connection is electric and it brings out new feelings. Feelings that aren’t exactly welcome. It’s a forbidden love that explodes into possibility only to be broken when the road get bumpy. It’s not an easy read and your heart is ripped out; however the growth that Holden and River go through both individually and together is amazing. They give each other hope. They learn to trust and break down the walls both have built up and it is gorgeous.

“You deserve to be loved out loud.”

I loved that it overlapped with The Girl in the Love Song because we get a deeper understanding of what the characters were going through. There was so much I wanted to know about Holden and River in TGITLS and got so much more than I could have imagined.

Overall, When You Come Back to Me is not an easy read but it’s worth all the pain and heartache in the end when you get to experience a love story like River and Holden’s. I loved it!

I have to add that I cannot wait for Ronan’s story! With every bit we get of him and Shiloh, I want more! I love this series and am excited to see where Emma takes us in the next book!
