Duke Evans didn’t expect to interrupt a beautiful woman in a staring contest with a bison on his favorite hiking trail. He also didn’t expect to see her again after rescuing her from the surly beast. As the sheriff in Calamity, Montana, he’s had his fair share of surprises but none as pleasant as pulling over a shiny black car and finding his mysterious hiking companion behind the wheel.

Only, she lied to Duke. She gave him a name as fake as her hair color. According to her driver’s license, her real name is Lucy Ross, the famous country music singer whose sudden disappearance has been a hot topic in the media over the past two weeks.

He’s not sure why Lucy lied about her identity or why she’s in Calamity. And she’s not talking. Instead, she offers him a bribe to keep her secret.

But Duke doesn’t want her money. He wants to know why this woman is on the run. And as long as the star shines on his badge, he’s going to find out.

Review

“In public, you’re Jade. But behind closed doors, you’re—”
“Lucy?” she breathed.
I shook my head. “Mine.”

5 spine-tinglingly awesome stars!

OMG, I love this book! Fantastic characters, epic chemistry, a sexy, fun and functional romance with heaps of passion, all the feels, no angst, and a touch of suspense just to make it exciting. I felt so good reading this book, full of eager anticipation, swept up in swoon, and madly in love with the story, and I’m still riding the high. Whether writing as Devney Perry or Willa Nash, Devney is just magic, and this book is a fave for 2020!

Lucy Ross is a country music superstar who has left her life behind and fled to the tiny town of Calamity in Montana under a fake name to start over. She’s reveling in her new-found freedom when she is pulled over by sexy Sheriff, Duke Evans – the very same man who ‘saved’ her from wild bison a couple of weeks earlier, and who she shared a moment with before they went their separate ways.

When they first met, Lucy introduced herself as ‘Jade’, but when Duke pulls her over for speeding, he gets a look at her license and uncovers her true identity. Wanting to know what the famous singer is doing in his small town, he agrees to keep her secret, but he determines then and there to learn what she’s up to, putting her firmly in his sights, and he takes every opportunity he can to figure her out.

It’s a fun set-up, and from the very first moment the sparks are flying. Lucy and Duke are wildly attracted to each other, they don’t hide it, and the flirting and banter is sensational as they feel each other out. They both have this quiet confidence about them and they don’t hold anything back, the sexual tension builds with each and every encounter, and when they finally take that step, holy hot damn, it’s on!

“We aren’t casual, Lucy.”
She dropped her eyes to her glass.
It would shock the hell out of me if she wanted casual. I wasn’t going to agree so it didn’t matter, but still, my heart stuttered as her silence lingered. Lucy had to know that whatever was happening here wasn’t casual.
“Okay,” Lucy whispered, lifting her gaze.
I let out the breath I’d been holding. “Glad that’s settled.”

I love these two together! Love, love, love them! They are fun, they are open, the laugh and share, they’re affectionate and sexy, and their chemistry is off the charts. They fall into a life together that is natural, easy and angst-free, and I loved every single moment with them!

“Your life was a lot simpler before I showed up in Calamity.”
“My life was lonely before you showed up in Calamity. These past few weeks, it’s been the best time I’ve had in years. Maybe ever.”
My heart melted. “Me too.”

Lucy is a great heroine – strong yet vulnerable, a little bit lost, but smart, sensible and no-nonsense, and I just loved her. And Duke! Oh holy swoon, I fell in mad love with him. He’s the strong, sexy, confident, big-hearted alpha that Perry writes so well. I adored his caring, protective nature, and I love how he puts his heart out there for his girl. He really is something special, and he absolutely melted my heart.

“Why are you with me, Sheriff?” She held her breath, the world around us disappearing as those green eyes searched mine.
“Because when you’re in the room, I can’t seem to focus on another person. Because you consume my thoughts, day and night. Because your smile makes my whole damn day.” I bent low, speaking so only she could hear me. “Because I don’t care if your name is Jade Morgan or Lucy Ross as long as at the end of the day, you’re mine.”

We get to meet some of the characters from the town of Calamity, and Duke has relationships that tie in closely to the story, which I really enjoyed. But the dramatic suspense comes from Lucy’s past and the reasons she fled Nashville in the first place. It’s exciting and brings a bit extra to the story without ever overwhelming it, and I was completely glued to my kindle as it all unfolded.

There’s a great intro to the next book in the series, The Bluff, which will feature Lucy’s best friend, Everly, and there’s plenty of other people in Calamity just begging to have their stories told. Oh, and there’s a cameo from another small-town Sheriff that is a real treat for Jamison Valley fans! I am beyond excited to lose myself in another of Perry’s small-town series, and can’t wait to continue one

This is a beautiful love story that completely captured my heart and had me feeling all the feels. I loved every moment, and finished it hugging my kindle with a huge smile on my face (and that bonus epilogue is just gold!).

“I love you, Lucy Ross. Jade Morgan. Whoever you need to be, I love you.”

You’ll never be alone,” he promised. “As long as there is a beat in my heart and breath in my lungs, you’ll never be alone.”

So much love for this one – 5 huge stars!

“Let me hit him a few pop flies, then I’ll drive you home.”

“Oh, that’s okay. I can walk.” She took a step away, waving as she walked backward. “See you around.”

“Lucy,” I said, her name—the sweet one—loud enough for only her to hear. “I’m driving you home.”

She arched an eyebrow. “Please?”

I strode into her space, this time so close that the cotton of my T-shirt brushed against the fabric of her tank top. Close enough that I heard the hitch in her breath. “That wasn’t a request.”

“Bossy,” she whispered. “That’s a new look for you.”

“And?”

“It’s not entirely unattractive.”
