This is a great little novella, a part of the Five Kingdoms world established in the The Princess and The Spy series by Lisette Marshall. It’s not available for sale, but is available free for subscribers to Marshall’s newsletter, you can sign up on her website (see above).

This story takes place in the Copper Court, and for those who have read Velvet, you’ll get to see a vivacious young Viviette, which was a nice treat. But this is the story of Zovinar, who was sent to the Copper Court by her uncle, and for four years she has been waiting for a suitable husband, but she remains unmarried and stuck in the king’s court.

Garreth is a thief on a noble mission who spends his evenings sneaking around the court’s balls, stealing from the wealthy. When he is caught by Zovinar, he thinks that it means his death, but instead the young lady who he initially writes off as a vapid husband-chaser, is actually smart and witty, and they share one heated dance together before he must make his escape.

But their one dance together isn’t enough, and when they meet again, they discover just how hot their chemistry simmers (pretty damn hot, actually!). But Garreth’s enemies have noticed his presence, and the time that he and Zovinar have spent together. Danger lurks, secret betrayals and sinister plots are revealed, and I really enjoyed the intriguing storylines and how they came together in such a short read. There’s a bit of excitement, and even more hotness before we get the hint of a happy ending, and thank God, Marshall has released bonus epilogues for this novella on her website, which provide the closure I needed, and finish off the story beautifully!

I feel like this novella has a big story, and can’t help but wonder how these events will tie into The Princess and The Spy as the series continues. I loved these characters, and was easily swept away into their story. I love the way Marshall writes, and am looking forward for more.
