5 stars

I am so in love with this book! A slow-burning, emotional and chemistry-filled age-gap romance between a widowed single father and his younger nanny, this story completely swept me away.

This is the second book of the Adair Family series. You could read it as a standalone, but there’s a lot of character crossover and it does follow on really nicely from the first book, Here With Me, which is also a 5-star read, so don’t miss out on that one!

We know a little bit about Regan from the first book. She is the younger sister of Here With Me heroine, Robyn, and even though we didn’t actually see Regan until the final page of that book, she was set up as a selfish and irresponsible wild child travelling the world and pretty much ignoring her family. Now, she has made it to the Scottish Highlands, and Ardnoch Estate, to reunite with her sister, and let me tell you, nothing is as it seems. From pretty much the first moment we see her, we learn that there is so much more to Regan than we have been led to believe, and the happy, perky front she puts on in front of others is just that – a front. She is complex and troubled, and she is determined to stay in town and make amends with her beloved sister, and I adored getting to know her.

Thane is the brother of Lachlan Adair (hero from Here With Me). He is the widowed father of two small children, and he’s in desperate need of a nanny. Though he’s initially wary of Robyn’s flighty younger sister, his children form an instant bond with her, and when she begs him for the chance to work for him, he agrees to employ her for the duration of her stay.

So Regan moves into a guest house on Thane’s property, and becomes his nanny/housekeeper. She’s great at her job and is instantly swept up into the family, and she thrives on the stability, comfort and friendship that she finds in Thane’s home. And as Thane and Regan get to know each other, attraction blooms.

OMG, I loved the set-up for this book, and I love Thane and Regan so much. They’ve both been through really hard times, and though they are at different stages of their life (he is 37, she’s 25), they have a lot in common, and they very quickly come to care for each other. And the chemistry is off-the-charts hot. I could feel every little interaction, every laugh, every smile, every meaningful glance and unintentional touch, and I fell so in love with these two, I was desperate to see how they would come together.

It’s not an easy road for them. Their situation causes some boundary issues, and a sense of the forbidden, and the age gap is a big concern for Thane. There are stops and starts along the way, but it’s exciting rather than angsty, and through it all, Regan shines as a woman who knows what she wants, and who puts her heart out there for the man she feels so much for, and I loved that!

“We can go around and around in circles for days, weeks…but it won’t chase this away, Thane. You want me. It isn’t convenient. It’s complicated…but it’s unavoidable.”

The sexual tension is fantastic. I felt it all, and I was just as antsy as the two of them for something to actually happen. And when it all becomes too much, their passion for each other pretty much explodes, and oh holy God, it’s so freaking hot!

“Go wait for me in the annex,” he demanded. Her eyes widened slightly. “Clothes off. Keep your underwear on because I want to take it off. And lights on so I can see you. When I get there, I expect you on the bed with your legs spread.”

Thane is a bit of a demon in the bedroom – lucky Regan – and they begin a no-strings arrangements that rocks both of their world. It’s passionate and intense, playful and sweet, and I could see them falling harder and harder for each other. But they keep what’s between them just for them, and (in practice at least) they don’t stray away from their original agreement, staying ‘just friends’… until their feelings for each other prove too complicated to navigate.

“I’m so in love with you, it scares me.”

I love these characters! Regan with her huge heart, desperate to find her place, and semi-serious Thane, who lives for his children and is still struggling with so many conflicted feelings after the death of his wife. Both so relatable, they have flaws, but they are realistic flaws, and I love how they were there to encourage and support each other through everything that they go through. They tease, they laugh, they banter, and their passion for each other is unreal. Regan and Thane are so gorgeous together, and I could not get enough of them.

There is some drama in this one, but it’s well-written, understandable, and ties into the story beautifully. Regan and Thane have both been through a lot, they both have secrets, and threats from the past emerge that put their family in danger. And when they should be pulling together, doubts and insecurities will threaten everything that they’ve found. It’s intense and emotional, and I was so invested that I couldn’t put this book down, and read to the early hours of the morning to see how it was all going to be resolved. And was I satisfied? Hell yes, I was! The ending brings the feels and wraps the story up beautifully, with an epilogue that left me grinning madly.

“I’m happy where I am, as long as I’m there with you.”

Obviously this is a romance book, and it’s such a gorgeous love story, but it’s also a story of family, and I adored the way Young wrote Thane’s family. Little Lewis and Eilidh are absolutely adorable, and sensational characters that bring so much to the story. The love for their Dad, and for Regan, is so beautiful, and the way that Thane and Regan adore the children is just gorgeous. Too often in this kind of book the kids are pushed to the side, but Thane is a family man, and this is a realistic reflection of family life. The children, and Thane and Regan’s interactions with them, are such an important part of the story, and I love what a huge part they played.

We also get to see lots of the rest of the Adair family, which I loved! Their relationships are not always easy, but the dynamics are fantastic, and I loved seeing the interactions between them all. I loved the special bonds between Robyn and Regan, and Thane and Lachlan, and we get to see mysterious brother, Brodan with a hint of his future romance (I’m here for that!). And OMG, with all of that sexual tension brewing I cannot WAIT for Mac and Arrochar’s book up next!

I’m slightly obsessed with this family, and this series, and I cannot wait for more.

Another amazing read from Samantha Young, I absolutely loved it – 5 stars!
