Blurb

My marriage started as a lie.

But some lies are worth telling.

My father’s dying wish was to walk me down the aisle, and I’d do anything for him.

Even marry a man I don’t love.

So when my fiance jilts me only days before the ceremony, I turn to my college friend, Oliver Parkerson, and convince him to marry me.

My family hasn’t met either man, so I’m confident we can pull this off.

But the feelings, our touches, the way my heart beats for him… none of it feels pretend. The way he holds me at night and carries me through loss tells me he’s not acting either.

I didn’t mean to fall for my fake husband, but real love was the one thing I couldn’t predict.

Except, nothing built on lies can last–I know that better than anyone.

But the truth might tear us apart forever.

Review

4.5 stars!

The fourth and final book in the Willow Creek Valley series, this is a gorgeously romantic and emotional read, full of wonderful tropes:
– Friends-to-lovers
– Fake romance
– Marriage of convenience
– Fantastic tie-ins to Corinne’s other series FTW!

I was sucked in from the very beginning and read it in a day, unable to put it down.

Maren’s world is crumbling around her, her beloved father is dying, and her fiancé has just dumped her two weeks before their wedding. She’s not shattered over the relationship break-down, it’s a super-fast engagement and she’s not even really in love with him, it’s just that walking her down the aisle and seeing her happily married is her father’s dying wish, and Maren is prepared to do anything to make that happen.

The wedding is due to take place at the Firefly Resort, owned and run by her old college friend, Oliver Parkerson and his siblings. Oliver is also the ex-boyfriend of her Maren’s best friend, Devney (from The One for Me, Arrowood, #3), which gives them history and a bit of a twisted dynamic, but Maren is comfortable – and desperate – enough to ask him to step in as her groom in a fake wedding to make her father’s dream come true.

Oliver is the fun-loving joker of his family. He’s funny and sweet, and I’ve loved him as the light-hearted brother to his siblings. But deep down, there is a whole world of hurt and vulnerability inside of him. He’s lost the woman he loves to someone else (twice), is sick of coming of second-best, and he’s determined not to get hurt like that again and has no intention of marrying. So when Maren comes along begging him to do the one thing he’s determined not to, his defences immediately go up… even if she is the most stunning woman he’s ever seen in his life. It takes some convincing from his family, who need the wedding to go ahead in order to get their resort up and running, so he reluctantly agrees, and the wedding is on!

It’s a fun set-up, and so entertaining as Oliver and Maren quickly go about learning everything they can about each other, and it’s clear even before they walk down the aisle that there are feelings there. Their chemistry sizzles, and I was buzzing with anticipation as we see hints of what is to come.

“This is crazy.”
“I know.”
“We’re supposed to be…”
“Pretending,” Oliver finishes before crushing his lips to mine.

Holy hot damn! And things continue to escalate as they get swept up in the emotion of the wedding, Maren’s father’s illness, and their growing feelings for each other, and it’s a fantastic set-up for their romance! Their passion for each other is insane, they are honest with each other about everything that is going on between them, and their attraction continues to blossom, and easily, naturally and against their best intentions, they fall and fall hard.

“We can make it work if it’s what we both want and I want you. Take a chance…for us.”

But their relationship started on a lie, and they are both still wrestling with grief and pain from the past. There is drama, and a whole lot of emotion as the story plays out, and I couldn’t put the book down. Michaels does a wonderful job writing the heartfelt intensity of it all, and my heart ached for them and all that they go through. I shed a few tears along the way, but wow, what a journey.

Corinne Michaels fans will be thrilled with the cameos in the his book! Not only do Devney and Sean from the Arrowood Brothers series appear (and I loved how Oliver and Devney’s past relationship is addressed), but Maren works as an analyst for a security firm, and her bosses are none other than Mark and Jackson from the Salvation series. Freaking awesome seeing them again, and Mark still makes me laugh.

This is such a gorgeous read. Oliver and Maren’s individual storylines are beautifully written and so heartfelt, and the love story is fun, sexy, swoony, and blessedly functional and honest. And Oliver! *swoon*. He made me melt so many times with the way he so obviously cared for Maren, the man is just perfect.

I loved this book. It’s a great finish to the series, and that final bonus epilogue is an absolute gem.

Loved it – 4.5 stars.
