Blurb

From the outside looking in, I live a charmed life: hockey legend for a father, my own promising future in the league, a great family, awesome friends. It’s not untrue, but it’s not quite that simple either.

My dad’s advice has always been to make hockey my number-one priority—at least until I make it to the pros. So, going into my senior year of college, I have a plan. I’ll put in the effort required to pass my classes, play hockey like my life depends on it, and avoid relationships. All I have to do is stay focused on the end game, and I’ll walk away with a degree and into a career in the NHL.

It should be easy.

But when a woman literally floats into my dock, just before summer ends and my senior year begins, I can’t resist one last hookup. What harm could a one-night stand do? It’s not like we even exchanged numbers.

Everything is fine until I run into her on campus.

It’s a big school. I should be able to avoid her.

Except she happens to be in my class.

And she’s not a student.

She’s my professor.

Review

5 stars!

Maverick is here and he is better than I could have imagined. I knew his story would be unforgettable and he did not disappoint. Bitter Sweet Heart delivers a wonderfully crafted teacher/student, age-gap, forbidden love story that is swoony, emotional, clever, entertaining, and heartwarming.

At the end of the summer before his senior year begins, Maverick meets Clover and they hit it off immediately. They spend a steamy twelve hours together and part ways thinking they probably won’t see each other again unless they run into each other at school. Well, they do run into each other again, only Clover isn’t a student, she is a professor and she just so happens to be teaching one of Maverick’s English classes.

I was so excited when I heard that Maverick Waters was getting his book. I enjoyed his mom and dad in Pucked and I loved and devoured his sister’s story, Little Lies, so I am not surprised that I’d love his story.

Maverick is a complicated character. He is the son of hockey legend Alex Waters, and while he may not be as good as his father, it’s a given that he will be drafted into the NFL, too. He just has to keep his eyes on the prize and deal with the pressure that comes from on and off the ice. There are other things in his life that weigh on him and he carries so much on his shoulders. This story brings us more of the emotion we got from Little Lies but from Maverick’s POV. We get his pain, fear, guilt, and so much regret due to the past but he keeps it bottled up. It’s not until Clover comes into his life the second time that he starts to open up.

Clover is fantastic. She is fighting her way back from her mistakes and is making a new start but the past continues to follow her. She is brave and strong but something needs a little support. Maverick is there for her several times and it just strengths their connection.

I love teacher/student romances if they are done right, and this one was done right. It is so good that I couldn’t put it down. I love that we get dual POVs because we dive deep into their characters and I feel like their imperfections bring them to life. The emotion is real and I wanted so bad for them to reach for what they truly wanted without judgement from others.

I loved the instant connection that Maverick and Clover shared when they first met, and now that she is his professor, that connection is stronger than even. The forbidden aspect makes it complicated in the best way and I loved how they handled the situation. Maverick did not shy away from how he felt but I totally understood where Clover’s reservations were coming from. I think the whole teacher/student dynamics were thought out and well written, and Maverick is so swoony. I loved the paper cranes. I enjoyed how they became closer by really getting to know each other without diving into bed immediately, and the sexual tension builds deliciously as the weeks go on. I knew these two would set the pages on fire and they do.

There is a lot of growth and change in this story. I love that Maverick goes after what he wants in life and that his family is there to support him. They remain true to their own characters from their own books and I loved seeing them all again.

Overall, I loved this book. I can’t wait for more of the Water’s family when River’s book comes out!!
