The follow up to the incredible Quicksilver, I have been desperately waiting for this book, and I loved diving back into this world – this time in dual POV! It’s another exciting ride with a fantastic bunch of characters, and I loved it.

This book picks up immediately where Quicksilver finished, and in no way can it be read as a standalone. The events at the end of the first book have led to big changes for Saeris, Kingfisher, and their crew, and they’re figuring out what it all means. With old and new friends—and just as many enemies—they’re doing everything they can to save their home and the people they care about. But now a new danger has emerged which threatens the entire realm, and time is running out to find a solution.

This is a beast of a read, and there’s a lot that happens in this book, but it happens without a whole lot of story progression. But I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. Saeris continues to uncover her powers as an alchemist, and she is quite the badass. She’s finding her place in Yvelia and making it her home, and we’re learning and discovering more right along with her. And in this book, we get Kingfisher POV! I feel like I got to know the enigmatic broody hero better, and loved his part of the story.

The best thing about this book is, without a doubt, the character dynamics. Callie Hart has given us some unforgettable characters in this series, and watching all of the different relationships is such a highlight. From loyal, protective Ren and Lorreth, devoted Archer, fascinatingly mysterious Tal and Foley, and even little Onyx, they all have a very special place in the story, and the found family in this series is just amazing. But it doesn’t get better than confident, say-it-like-it-is, scene-stealing Carion Swift. And the frenemy-ship of broody Kingfisher and Carion is absolute gold!

“She isn’t my girlfriend. She’s my mate,” Fisher said quite amicably. “And if any part of your body, literally any part of it, comes into contact with hers, then I will remove it.”
Carrion thought about this. “What about if she’s hanging off a cliff by one hand and can’t hold on much longer? Can I touch her then?”

And then, of course, there’s the romance. We glimpsed Saeris and Kingfisher’s mate bond in the first book, and it is evolving into an epic love, though I have to say, the feels aren’t as intense in this series as in o. There’s so much steamy time (our dirty talking Fisher continues to be in top form), and a whole lot of breathlessly swoony declarations. We even get to see glimpses of playfulness between them with actual smiles from Kingfisher, and while I would love to see more of their interactions and banter outside of the bedroom, I did enjoy the swoon of it all.

“I had no idea what you would mean to me. I had no idea what I would do to keep you safe. When I close my eyes, you are all I fucking see, Saeris Fane. I could be dead in the ground five thousand years and the frosts could have taken my bones, and still no other male will ever have loved another female the way that I love you.”

There’s a lot to take in, and to me it doesn’t have the same epic feel of the first book, but I loved getting swept up in the story and all of the twists and turns. The book ends on a cliffhanger, with most of the storylines left unresolved, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it all goes from here. With one book left to come for Saeris and Kingfisher (and three more in the world for the other characters), I am loving this series!

4.5 stars!

I read this as an audiobook, narrated by Stella Bloom and Anthony Palmini (the narrators from the first book), and they do an amazing job. Palmini, in particular, brings the male characters to life with such diverse personalities, he brings you right into the story (you’ve probably heard his ultra-sexy Kingfisher voice in reels all over social media), and this series is so freaking good to listen to!
