4 stars!

This is the second book in The Queen & The Assassin series, and it’s a sexy, exciting and romantic read that brings us back to the addictive Five Kingdoms world, and I loved it!

After assassin, Runo, fell for the Queen of Redwood and made the life-changing decision to walk away from his mission and his home and stay with her, he and Tamar have continued their secret affair, and things between them continue to be playful and passionately intense

A visit from neighbouring royalty puts their secret to the test when, in an exciting development, Jaghar and Viviette (from The Princess & The Spy series) come to visit. I so loved seeing these two again! Plus we get the bonus of Jaghar and Runo in the same room, and any scene that involved both of them is absolute gold! Jaghar is a smart man, and it doesn’t take him too long to figure out what’s actually going on, and I loved their banter and smartassery.

But they also bring bad news – the Taavi Empress has sent a new assassin, this time with Runo as the target. But the assassin has a personal vendetta against Runo, which puts Tamar directly into the firing line as well. As Runo goes on the offensive, we get to see what a smart and cunning man he is, and just how far he is prepared to go to protect the woman he loves, and I loved getting to see this side of him.

“Tamar.” Runo sat up again, fixing his gaze on her. “I’m not being poetic when I say I’d rather die than see you hut. You might have noticed.”

“Stop hurting yourself and I’ll be here to stop anyone else who tries, I promise.”

But at the same time, Runo is struggling to find his place in Tamar’s life. She is clinging on to her authority and her reputation as the badass queen she feels that she needs to be, refusing to even acknowledge the man in her life outside of the bedroom. It’s a difficult position for both of them, and I could see where they were both coming from, but behind closed doors their romance is just gorgeous.

“The problem,” he said, wrapping his arms around her again, “is that I love you like the madman I am, and I want to love you whenever it damn well pleases me.”

And so, they find themselves playing a very delicate and dangerous political game. With both of their lives on the line, and their relationship under continuing strain, they’ll have to work through it, trusting in each other to survive, and to keep the kingdom intact.

This is another really strong read from Lisette Marshall. I love coming back to this world, and when the book finished, I just wanted to keep reading, not ready for it to end. She’s done a great job further developing Runo and Tamar’s love story, and after the final events of this book, I’m really excited to see where the story goes in the final book of their trilogy.

Loved it – 4 stars!
